Un niño de un año llamado Nicholas Dominici falleció el pasado viernes 15 de septiembre del 2023 en Nueva York luego de haber sido expuesto a fentanilo mientras dormía una siesta en una guardería. Tres menores más, con edades entre los 8 meses y los 2 años, que también entraron en contacto con el potente narcótico, tuvieron que ser reanimados y terminaron hospitalizados, informa la agencia de noticias Associated Press.
Grei Méndez, quien dirigía el jardín infantil, ubicado en un apartamento del distrito del Bronx, llamó a los servicios de emergencia para alertar de que los niños bajo su cuidado no respondían. Nicholas fue declarado muerto en un centro médico. Durante la inspección del inmueble fueron descubiertos rastros de fentanilo debajo de la estera donde él y los otros infantes habían estado durmiendo, aseguró este lunes 18 de septiembre del 2023 el detective de la Policía de Nueva York Joseph Kenny, citado por el medio.
Méndez fue arrestada junto con Carlisto Acevedo Brito, que alquilaba una de las habitaciones del departamento. Las autoridades recuperaron de un armario del pasillo de la vivienda alrededor de un kilogramo de fentanilo, junto con una prensa utilizada para combinar la sustancia con otros estupefacientes. En el cuarto que ocupaba Acevedo Brito se descubrió un aparato similar, que también es usado por traficantes para empaquetar, distribuir y vender drogas.
